Hi, my name is Annie Nguyen and I am an audio Editor and Producer. You might have heard my tinkering in one of these places over the last nine years:
I work in narrative audio, investigative journalism and local news. Truely, narrative is my favorite carb. When I say narrative audio, I mean that I make stories about real people. I use the tools of character, plot, internal motivation, external motivation, scenes and dialoge to craft stories.
As a storyteller and as a journalist, I understand my power and priviledges in shaping someone’s story. So it’s important for me to practice generative storytelling vs extractive. In other words, here are some questions I like to ask for setting intention and guiding iterations:
“Whose ego is this actually for?”
“How can we shape the story so it’s not just reacting to countering tropes?”
“How can the story embody ‘having tea with your demons -Yumi Yaakugawa.”
My approach guides my practice as an audio Producer and Editor. Some of my storytelling highlights include my work with Invisible Institute on “Somebody,” a Pulitzer finalist podcast. Another was getting the chance to interview a storyteller about skin-walkers.
